Vintage Polish Posters | I Bruno Schulz

Bruno Schulz (1892–1942) was a Polish Jewish writer, artist, literary critic and art teacher. He is considered one of the great Polish prose stylists of the 20th century. In 1938, he was awarded the Polish Academy of Literature´s prestigious Golden Laurel award. His book “Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass” was published in 1937. This poster´s art (Schulz´ headshot) was copied from that 1937 book cover. Schulz was shot and killed by a Gestapo officer in 1942 while walking back home toward his ghetto with a loaf of bread. Polish artist Krzysztof Bednarski was born in 1953 and graduated from the sculpture department of Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1978. Between 1976 and 1981, he designed posters for film and theater projects. An example is this poster for the play in Teatr Studio “I, Bruno Schulz” directed by Jerzy Grzegorzewski. Since 1980 he has exhibited posters in the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw. Most of his posters are collected in the Muzeum Plakatu (Poster Museum) in Warsaw.
