Treny | Laments | Tomaszewski

“Laments” (“Treny”) is a series of nineteen Polish elegies by Jan Kochanowski, written in 1579 after the death of his young daughter, Urszul and published in 1580. The poems chronicle his profound grief, moving from initial shock and despair through questioning and protest, to a final, bittersweet consolation found in a dream of his mother and daughter. This masterpiece of Polish Renaissance literature blends classical forms with deeply personal emotion, challenging humanist ideals as it explores loss, the vanity of life, and the struggle to find meaning in tragedy. The poster artist, Henryk Tomaszewski (1914–2005), was a pioneering Polish graphic artist and one of the founding figures of the Polish School of Posters. Known for his minimalist style, wit, and bold use of color and form, he transformed poster design into a respected art form. As a longtime professor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, he influenced generations of designers and helped shape postwar visual culture in Poland and beyond.
