Karel Čapek (1890–1938) was a Czech writer, playwright, critic and journalist. He has become best known for his science fiction, including his novel  War with the Newts (1936) and the play R.U.R (1920), which introduced the word robot. He also wrote many politically-charged works dealing with the social turmoil of his time. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature seven times, but never won. His legacy as a literary figure became well established after World War II. The Czech poster artist Josef Flejsar was born in 1922 and became a famous graphic artist and painter. Flejsar studied between 1945 and 1947 at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in the studio of Professor Antonin Strnadel. After graduation, he joined the advertising company WA Schlosser. He created a total of three hundred theater, music, film, book illustration, exhibition and political posters. Abroad, he was compared to the painter Joan Miró. Flejsar participated in designs for the EXPO Brussels (1958), and EXPO Montreal (1967), and designed about thirty book covers for the publishing house Mladá Fronta and Czechoslovak Writer. He passed away in 2010.
