Stanis\u0142aw Wyspia\u0144ski<\/b> (1869\u20131907) was a Polish<\/a>\u00a0playwright<\/a>,\u00a0painter<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0poet<\/a>, as well as interior and furniture designer. A patriotic writer, he created a series of symbolic, national dramas within the artistic philosophy of the\u00a0Young Poland<\/a> Movement. He was a friend of Paul Gaugin<\/strong>. A wedding party he attended was the inspiration for his widely acclaimed play Wesele<\/strong> (The Wedding)<\/a><\/i>. It is a deeply critical yet sarcastic expos\u00e9 of Polish society of the 19th century. “Wesele<\/i>” transformed Wyspianski from a moderately successful visual and verbal artist associated with the\u00a0Young Poland<\/a>\u00a0movement into a national dramatist-visionary whose significance in Poland is comparable to\u00a0Yeats<\/a>‘ in Ireland, O’Neill<\/a>‘s in America, or\u00a0Maeterlinck<\/a>‘s in Belgium.\u00a0<\/span>The drama made references to the contemporary situation in\u00a0Polonia<\/a>\u00a0and depicted a powerless society. Although censorship barred the sale of copies of\u00a0Wesele<\/strong> (The Wedding)<\/a><\/i>, the play was staged in the theatre. A successor play (the subject of this poster),\u00a0 Wyzwolenie\u00a0(\u201cLiberation\u201d)<\/strong><\/em>, published two years later, contained ideological commentary on\u00a0Wesele<\/em>. Poster artist Wies\u0142aw Strebejko <\/strong>(1945-1994) was born in Poland. He was a graduate of the Secondary School of Fine Arts in Bydgoszcz. He specialized in posters and created over 250 of them. He gained recognition in Poland and abroad (mainly in France). A set designer and interior decorator by profession, he prepared sets for approximately 30 theater plays. Strebejko was one of the first to have a plaque on the Walk of Fame in the Old Market Square in Gorz\u00f3w.
