Polish painters and art professors, beginning
in the post-war 1940’s responded to their country’s
unique social and political events by raising the
level of poster design to a true art form. The “Polish
School of Posters” as their work came to described in
international art circles, was acclaimed as a “conceived”
poster image. One that induces looking and thinking. No
commercial limitations were imposed on the great Polish
poster artists designing movie, theater, music, dance, circus,
sports, jazz and travel posters.
These artists, who took so many international design
awards during the 1940’s-1970’s, created a dramatic and
powerful poster language. Each artist built their career
and body of work by designing cultural posters that
gave them the reputation of masters of “art of the street.”
